One of the first things we do when we wake up is pour ourselves a cup of coffee. Because the invigorating drink tastes great - and it gives us a fresh start to the day. At the breakfast table, at work or with a piece of cake: coffee is a part of everyday life for many Danes. But that wasn't always the case. Where does this delicious treat come from? And how can it be prepared? We've delved into the coffee universe and found some exciting answers.

From farm to fork: The history of coffee

As with many spirits and beers, the history of coffee is said to begin in a monastery. In the year 500, a couple of monks from Ethiopia are said to have noticed that their goats changed when they ate the red berries of a widespread plant: they were more active. The monks became curious and began to decoction the berries.

It wasn't until the early 17th century that coffee came to Europe and the first coffee houses were established on European soil: in 1647 in Venice, then in Vienna, Paris and Hamburg. Around the 1650s, coffee was also introduced in Denmark. At first, drinking coffee was reserved for the wealthy. But in the late 19th century, the coffee market developed and coffee became more accessible.

Culinary coffee experiences: Unleash your inner barista!

Coffee isn't just coffee - preparing a good cup can be an art in itself, according to many connoisseurs. The water should be neither too hot nor too cold, and the coffee should not be brewed with too much or too little coffee powder. Of course, the coffee plants themselves also differ, and it makes a difference whether you use one or the other: Arabica, a very popular coffee bean, has a nutty and mild flavour. Mocha, on the other hand, is stronger and more intense. How do you like your coffee best?

  • Espresso pot: Prepare your coffee in an espresso pot on a hot stove, preferably with very finely ground coffee powder - and enjoy an Italian flavour experience!
  • Filter coffee: A very simple and easy way to brew coffee, where you should use regular finely ground coffee. The coffee filter was invented in 1908 in Dresden by Melitta Bentz.
  • French press: If you like French press coffee, you should choose coarse ground coffee powder. This allows the coffee to brew a little longer - and finely ground coffee powder would make it bitter in flavour.
  • Instant coffee: The perfect solution for busy people - instant coffee powder, invented in Japan in 1901.

Speciality coffees for every taste

Do you need milk and/or sugar in your coffee? The black beverage is very versatile and it doesn't take much to give it a flavour boost. You've probably indulged in a cappuccino, latte macchiato, café au lait or cold brew at your local café. In 2020, the range of speciality coffees was expanded with yet another delight - Dalgona coffee! This trend started in Korea and you can easily prepare it at home:

Put 2 tbsp. instant coffee, 2 tbsp. sugar and 2 tbsp. hot water in a bowl and whisk to a thick foam. Pour cold milk and ice cubes into a glass - top with the coffee foam and enjoy!
